Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to do to get my own web site?

To have your own web site you need to realize that there are three sides to this triangle.
1. Registration. Your domain must be registered to you.
2. Web Hosting. This is when you rent disk space on a web server so you can park your designed page online for the world to access.
3. Design. You can do this step yourself or you can hire it to be done. Without creating a web page you have nothing to put online. We do not do design work but we can offer sources to get help in this area.

I know the domain I want. What now?

If you know the domain you would like to have the next step is to fill out our online form. Even if you don't want a hosting service yet just let us get this registered for you.

You can go directly to the domain sign up form. Click Here

I am currently hosted somewhere else and I want to move my hosting to Midcoast.
What do I do?

The first step is to fill out the online form. If you have special needs you can fill those in the comments section. We will get back to you as soon as possible. Make sure your current host knows you are leaving. Making this your next step will ensure a smooth transfer for you.

I submitted a sign up form and I have not heard anything back yet. Why is this?

Some forms can be completed sooner than others for many reasons. While we make every effort to get domains set up quickly there are times when that is not always possible. If a domain is taking a while to be set up you can be sure the hold up is beyond the control of Midcoast Internet. While this is rarely a problem we thank you in advance for your patience if this situation occurs during your set up process.

How long does a web hosting account take to set up?

Ideally it is registered and set up the same day. Nearly all domains are set up within a week and most are set up in a few days. There will always be exceptions of course but we do make every effort to get them set up as quickly as possible.

MIS says no tech support for web hosting. Does this mean I am left in the dark?

Not at all. If you feel your domain is not working correctly due to a technical problem on our end please let us know. We will verify and correct problems ASAP.
No tech support means we don't teach people how to upload pages beyond providing upload settings. We also don't provide or teach webpage design. We can also direct you to sources to get help or learn the process of web page design and upload.

What happens on nights and weekends if there is an emergency?

All our servers are closely monitored 24 hours a day. Not only that but they all have automated alarms that alert people "on call". If anything goes wrong someone knows about it. The worst thing that can happen is that your page is served from an offisite backup server.

Most web hosting companies don't use secure firewalls. Why do you do it?

It is true that most hosting companies don't use firewalls. You can FTP in from any server anytime. While this is a huge convenience it is also a huge risk. It rarely makes it into the news but hacking web sites happens frequently. It does happen around here. The security measures we take here at Midcoast Internet have stopped hackers dead in their tracks many times. If you are considering a web host you should demand that upload access to your site be protected behind a secure firewall. You wouldn't leave your store or home without a lock on the door. Why take chances with your web site?

I had to give a username and a password on sign up form. What was this for?

The username and password you gave on the signup form are used when you upload your web pages. You should keep these in a secure place! Without these your page can not be uploaded. If you need to call us to get your username and password we will ask you some security questions. Please have your latest statement available.
